Industry & History | The first time people came to live in Osaka-Sayama and the surrounding area was during the Paleolithic era. Because the mountainous region to the west that meets Sakai city was a place known for producing Sue ware, the name Mt. Touki (Mt. Ceramic) was given to the area and the remains of kilns have been found dating from the Kofun period. Sayama lake that is located in the center of the city also appears in old Japanese texts such as the Record of Ancient Matters and Nihon-Shoki which expresses how vital the lake was to the area. Construction of the lake goes back to the first part of the 7th century and is the oldest reservoir in Japan with a dam. The reservoir underwent a major revision during 1996 and it was subsequently selected as one of the 100 best waters in Japan. Nature trails were also created for citizens to enjoy and in 2007 it was selected as one of 100 historical parks in Japan. The farming industry has always been prevalent in Osaka-Sayama since long ago, but during the Taisho era, industries that manufactured bricks and roof tiles, textiles and weaving factories gradually began to appear. During the Showa era, the main industries switched to mainly textile industries that created clothing and machine sewing, ironworking, casting and lumber. Commercial businesses included confectioners and wood, coal and sugar businesses. The city landscape started to largely change during the 1960's and 1970's when the development of Sayama New Town rapidly increased the population of the city, brought in large commercial businesses such as large supermarket chains and increased commercial activity mainly in the consumer market. Meanwhile, after the Second World War, small subcontracting companies which dotted the surrounding area around Osaka and Sakai city such as machine and metal manufacturers, general machinery manufacturers and textile industries started to decline due to being surrounded by suburbs which were difficult on their bottom lines. Today, while the business environment is still tough and competition hot for businesses within the city because of large business and chain stores continually entering the area and how this changes the social and economic structure, citizens, commercial entities and the government are all coming together and working hard to revitalize the area. |
